Touch-up tip. The range and finish (e.g. Covaplus Vinyl Matt vs Durable Matt) matter as much as the colour — quote both at the decorator's merchant. Each room in the explorer above has a “Copy this room's specification” button for exactly that.

Worth doing in week one. Register the AEG appliances and the Vaillant boiler with their manufacturers — registration typically extends or activates the warranty, and it only needs the model numbers above.

Utilities & services

Where everything lives.

The locations you'll want at exactly the moment you need them — meters, valves, the stopcock — plus the suppliers each service is with on the day of handover.

On moving day. Photograph the electricity and gas meters as opening readings, and tell each supplier the date of completion. Water is unmetered — Southern Water bills by council tax band, so there's no reading to take.

Always a Tuesday.

Winchester collects every stream on Tuesdays. Frequencies differ — general and recycling alternate fortnights, garden waste shares the general-waste week.
